Writing Competitions

All competitions are now closed. The short story competition will re-open on Feb 1, 2017.

Field of Words runs international writing competitions and promotes the work of emerging writers. As of February 2017, and across the year, we’ll be running comp’s in the categories of short fiction, flash fiction, memoir and feature/genre fiction. Our site will be updated to reflect these changes soon.

All entrants must be aged 18 and over. All categories offer cash prizes for the winner and runner-up.

The names and works of competition winners and runners up will be published on our Home page. The names and works of all monthly finalists will be published on the appropriate Finalists page. The announcement of finalists is dependent upon the quality of work submitted. If  stories do not meet the high standard expected of a competition finalist, then no finalists will be chosen for that month.

See the Short Story Submissions page or the Flash Fiction Submissions page for more information about the Field of Words writing competitions, including entry fees, rules and guidelines.  Details about the Memoir and Feature/Genre competitions will be posted soon.

See the Critiquing and Editing Services page for more information about how we can help you further develop your writing skills.

Please note, by entering our competition, or by seeking our professional editing services, you agree to receiving the FoW monthly newsletter. This will provide you with important updates and useful writing tips. An unsubscribe option is available.

  4. Hi, is it free?

  5. Hi,
Is there a theme that the short stories and flash fiction must revolve around?

      Hi Tatiana,

There is no specified theme and you can write about whatever you wish. The only restriction is that we don’t read submissions that revolve around erotica.

    Are poems ok?

  7. Is there any word limit for the short stories? And when can I submit my story for a competition?

Hi Morgan, The limit for short story entries is between 1,000 – 2,500 words. We’ll be open again in February 2017.
